September. My birthday month, which I mention only because it gives me an excuse to do exactly what I want, and what I want this year is to see Practical Magic 2 at the Roadhouse on the 10th. Two witchy sisters, a cursed family, and me in a theater full of people who also grew up watching the first one on repeat. That's the whole birthday plan. It's perfect.
But beyond my personal agenda — something shifts this month. Not the temperature, not yet; don't let anyone sell you on "fall in September." But the light changes. The sun drops a little lower, the mornings get that first faint edge of not-quite-cool, and the whole city seems to exhale and start making plans again. Patios reopen. Calendars fill. People remember they have friends.
And it's a big month for who we are as a city. Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off on the 15th, right alongside Mexican Independence Day — and in a town this deeply, proudly Mexican, that's not a footnote. It's the main event. Comic-Con takes over downtown, Weird Al plays the arena, and the restaurants roll out Restaurant Week.

Cultural & Community Events
Tucson Comic-Con
September 4–6 | Tucson Convention Center, 260 S. Church Ave.
Tucson's flagship pop-culture weekend, back over Labor Day weekend and drawing 15,000+ fans a year. Celebrity guests, artist alley, cosplay contests, gaming, panels, and vendors packed into the TCC. This year's guest list includes Doug Jones, John Ratzenberger, and more. Whether you're deep in a fandom or just want to watch a small child dressed as Baby Yoda melt down over a churro, it's a genuinely fun downtown weekend.
Hours: Friday 2–7 PM, Saturday 10 AM–6 PM, Sunday 10 AM–5 PM.
Mexican Independence Day Celebration — Presidio San Agustín del Tucson
Saturday, September 12 | 6–9 PM (doors 5:45) | 196 N. Court Ave. | Free
One of the most meaningful nights on the Tucson calendar, and it's free. After Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821, the Presidio itself spent decades under Mexican rule — so this history is literally the ground you're standing on. The evening features a Ballet Folklórico performance by Danzacultura Mexicana, mariachi from Los Changuitos Feos, and the traditional El Grito — the cry for independence — presented by Sandra Orozco of the Consulate of Mexico. Dr. Luis Coronado Guel of the U of A closes the night with a lecture on the history of El Grito. Brought to you by the Presidio Museum and Tucson Mexico Sister Cities.
The schedule: doors at 5:45, Danzacultura Mexicana at 6, Los Changuitos Feos at 7, the Mexican National Anthem and El Grito at 7:45, and Dr. Coronado Guel's lecture at 8. Metered street parking is available nearby, there's a paid lot at 100 W. Franklin (across from El Charro), and the SunLink Streetcar (free) stops at Church & Broadway and Church & Congress.
Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15 – October 15
Not a single event but a full month, and Tucson does it right. Expect programming across the whole city — music, food, art, folklórico, and history — celebrating the Mexican and Latino heritage that makes Tucson Tucson. I'll flag specific events as they firm up, but keep your eyes open all month.
Live Music & Performances
Ballet Tucson — Steps Forward
Friday, September 11 | 7 PM | Berger Performing Arts Center
One night only, and a genuinely special one. Steps Forward is Ballet Tucson's choreographers' showcase — a batch of brand-new works created by company dancers for their fellow dancers, premiering all in one evening. At the end, the audience votes for its favorite, and the winner gets an encore on the mainstage later in the season. Stick around after for a Q&A with the choreographers themselves, moderated by Artistic Director Margaret Mullin. It's a rare look at dancers stretching into a whole new role, and exactly the kind of local-arts night worth showing up for.
Weird Al Yankovic — Bigger & Weirder 2026 Tour
Sunday, September 20 | 7:30 PM | Tucson Arena
Forty years in and still the hardest-working man in accordion-based comedy. The Bigger & Weirder Tour hits the Tucson Arena with the hits, the deep cuts, a giant video wall, and multiple costume changes. If you grew up on "Amish Paradise" and "White & Nerdy," this is a genuinely great night. Bring the kids — some of them will get it, some won't, and that's part of the fun.

Sonoran Restaurant Week
September 4–13 | Citywide
Ten days, roughly 120 kitchens, and the best excuse all year to eat somewhere new. Participating restaurants serve fixed-price menus at $15, $25, $35, $45, and $55 — each at least 20% below what those courses normally cost. No pass, no coupon, no code: just ask for the Restaurant Week menu when you sit down. Book ahead where you can, because ten days of full rooms is exactly what it sounds like.
Salsa, Tequila & Taco Challenge
Sunday, September 6 | VIP 5 PM, GA 6 PM (both till 8:30) | El Conquistador Tucson, A Hilton Resort, 10000 N. Oracle Rd. | $135 VIP / $100 GA | 21+
In its 18th year, and one of the most purely fun food events in town. 30+ of Southern Arizona's top restaurants and mixologists compete with their most inventive salsas, tacos, and cocktails — and you taste freely and vote for the winners. Live music, artists working in real time, and, yes, live lucha libre wrestling woven through the evening. Eat, sip, vote, and watch somebody get body-slammed between taco rounds. Proceeds support Art State Arizona's arts programming.

Sabino Canyon Crawler Night Tours
Saturdays through October 25 | 5700 N. Sabino Canyon Rd.
As the evenings cool, the Sabino Canyon Crawler runs its night tours on Saturdays — a narrated tram ride into the canyon after dark, when the desert is at its most alive and most comfortable. One of the loveliest low-effort ways to be in nature at night without a headlamp and a lot of commitment.
Tucson Botanical Gardens — $5 Fridays
Every Friday through September 26 | 2150 N. Alvernon Way
Five bucks gets you into the Botanical Gardens every Friday this month. Small, walkable, shady, and gorgeous — a great low-key Friday when you want green without driving up a mountain.
National Public Lands Day
Saturday, September 26 | Fee-free day
The nation's largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands — and a fee-free day at national parks. In the Tucson area, you can enjoy Saguaro National Park's two districts (Eastside – Rincon Mountain District, and Westside – Tucson Mountain District), Tumacácori National Historical Park, and Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. Have fun and enjoy the health benefits of being outdoors.
