Rita Ranch is southeast Tucson's answer to "I want a newer house with room to breathe and a straight shot to work." Sitting south of I-10 between Houghton and Rita Roads, it's a big, spread-out community — really 20-plus subdivisions stitched together — with homes that mostly went up from the 1990s onward: single- and two-story stucco floor plans, open layouts, and low-maintenance desert lots. The location does a lot of the work here, with Davis-Monthan, Raytheon, and the UA Tech Park all a short drive and I-10 putting downtown about half an hour out. The area is served by the Vail School District, with schools like Desert Willow Elementary and Esmond Station K-8 located within the community. Day-to-day, it's well covered: Purple Heart Park anchors the recreation side with ball fields, a skate park, splash pad, and walking paths; Ivan's Spot handles the dog crowd; the Julian Wash Greenway runs along the southern edge and ties into The Loop; and errands live at the Safeway plaza and the growing Houghton Town Center. As for the name — local lore says Howard Hughes, who bought 20,000 acres out here in 1951 for his missile plant, may have named the ranch after Rita Hayworth. There's no proof, but it's a better story than most subdivisions get.
