What to Do in Tucson This July

Your local guide to 4th of July fireworks, monsoon season, live music, and surviving the heat

By Jennifer Winchester | July 2026 |Tucson Living

July. The big one.

This is the month Tucson stops being subtle about it. Triple digits by mid-morning, the kind of sun that feels personal. But here's the good news: the monsoons came early this year — we got our first real rains back on June 15th — so we're already deep in the best season the desert has. And there is genuinely nothing like a Sonoran Desert thunderstorm. The smell of creosote after the rain, the sky going purple-black at 4 PM, the whole valley exhaling. Worth every degree of June we suffered to get here.

So we adapt. Early mornings, late evenings, and a deep, abiding respect for air conditioning. Here's what's worth getting out of the house for this month — or not leaving the house for, in the case of that last one.

Admission is one non-perishable food item or a $1 donation per person, benefiting the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona — so you're giving back while you celebrate. Free parking, $3 hot dogs, kids' games, face painting, and jumping castles. One of the best family-value nights of the month.

A note on the desert in July: if you've got pets, fireworks week is rough on them. Keep them inside, keep them cool, and if you've got a nervous one, you already know the drill. My secret is to watch loud action movies starting at about 6 PM until 12:30 AM or whenever they stop with the fireworks. (My Kitty Whisperer clients have heard this speech.)

Sweet Corn Extravaganza and Taste of Summer at Apple Annie's

Worth the drive. Apple Annie's out in Willcox kicks off its Sweet Corn Extravaganza July 11 (running through September 7) with the best sweet corn in Southern Arizona — take home a half dozen, a farmer's dozen, or a five-dozen sack, with roasted corn on the cob served on weekends. That same weekend their Taste of Summer event runs July 11–12 and 18–19 at the orchard: chamoy peach and watermelon slushies, peach donut sundaes, seasonal milkshakes, and fruit bowls with Tajín. It's about 80 miles east, so make a morning of it — go early, beat the heat, eat your weight in corn.

There will be an actual mini house on site to walk through. Local artists, makers, and vintage dealers have donated art and goods for a pay-as-you-wish market, with all proceeds going straight to the project. Live music from French guitarist Elisabeth Blin (6–7 PM) and the Denise Lane and Tammy West duo (7–8 PM), plus food, a silent auction, and a free card-making table where you can make welcome cards for the new residents (led by paper crafter Rachel Ann Johnson). Art, vintage finds, good music, and a genuinely good cause on a warm monsoon night. Hard to beat.

Outdoor & Nature Activities

The rule in July: go early, or go after the storm.

Tucson monsoon storm rolling across the valley

Monsoon Watching

All Month

The monsoons showed up early this year — first rains hit June 15th — so we're already in it. This isn't an event, it's a Tucson pastime. Find a spot with a view — Gates Pass, Sentinel Peak, or honestly your own porch — and watch the storms roll across the valley. The lightning, the smell, the dramatic skies. Best free show in town.

And look, we all know how this works. The rain comes the second you wash your car. So if the storms ever go quiet this month, you know your civic duty: wash the car, get your hair done, leave the windows down, schedule something outdoors you really can't afford to cancel. Take one for the team. The whole valley thanks you in advance.

Just respect the flash floods when they do come: never drive through flooded washes. (The Stupid Motorist Law is real, and it has your name on it.)

Co-Host: Ashleigh McGill, Loan Officer – Park Grove Lending

When: Tuesday, July 28th  |  6 PM

It's too hot to go look at houses in person right now, so let's do the smart-money version: learn the whole process from your couch, in the AC, with a cold drink.

Thinking about buying a home but unsure where to start? This workshop takes the mystery out of the process. Join me and Ashleigh as we walk you through financial prep, what to actually expect during a transaction, and closing day tips — so you can feel informed and ready for your next steps, whether you're just exploring or ready to jump in.

This is a no-judgment, no-pressure zone. Ask the questions you've been embarrassed to Google. We've heard them all.

That's July, friends. Stay hydrated, stay cool, keep your pets inside on the 4th, pull over for the flooded washes, and go watch a monsoon roll in at least once this month. The desert's about to put on a show.
